The Hidden Back Pain of Fatherhood: Why New Dads Often Struggle in the First Months

Osteo Jura The Hidden Back Pain of Fatherhood: Why New Dads Often Struggle in the First Months

The arrival of a baby is one of the most exciting and life-changing moments a person can experience. The early months of fatherhood are filled with incredible memories, new routines, and a deep desire to be present for every moment. But alongside the joy of welcoming a newborn, many fathers experience a physical challenge that often goes unspoken: persistent upper and lower back pain.

From lifting and rocking a baby to carrying them in a sling or carrier, changing nappies, leaning over a cot, and spending long periods in unfamiliar positions, the demands placed on a new father’s body can quickly add up. Sleep deprivation can make things even harder, as the body has less time to recover and muscles can become fatigued more easily.

For many dads, back pain is not just a physical issue. Ongoing discomfort can affect mood, energy levels, confidence, and the ability to fully enjoy this special stage of life.

The Physical Demands of Early Fatherhood

Newborn care involves a lot of repetitive movements. Carrying a baby on one side, bending forward while feeding or settling them, and using a baby carrier for long periods can place extra strain on the muscles of the neck, upper and lower back.

The body often responds by increasing the workload of certain postural muscles to keep you upright and stable. Over time, these muscles can become overworked and tense, while other muscles that should support movement may become less active. This imbalance can lead to stiffness, discomfort, and sometimes significant pain.

A New Father’s Journey Back to Movement

One of Osteo Jura’s patients came to the clinic six months after the birth of his son. He had been experiencing constant lower and upper back pain, which was made significantly worse by using a baby carrier.

Before becoming a father, he enjoyed running, but his lower back pain had progressed to the point where attempting to run would trigger painful spasms. The ongoing discomfort began to affect his mental health, leaving him feeling less present and making it harder to fully enjoy the early months with his newborn son.

During his assessment, it became clear that his postural muscles were being over-recruited and working far harder than they needed to. He had developed significant muscle tension and was not doing the appropriate exercises to help release and rebalance these areas.

The imbalance was so pronounced on one side that his posture initially appeared similar to scoliosis. However, further assessment showed that this was due to muscular imbalance rather than a structural spinal change.

A combination of manual therapy and exercise therapy was used to reduce tension, improve movement, and help him regain confidence in his body. After just a few sessions, he was able to move comfortably again, carry his son without experiencing severe pain, and, by the end of his treatment, had returned to running.

Reflecting on his experience, he said:
“Iona is brilliant. I have now seen her a number of times for lower back pain and it's made a massive improvement. She is very talented, smart, professional and kind. I would highly recommend her.”

Looking After Your Body During Fatherhood

Fatherhood is a chapter of life that deserves to be enjoyed, not overshadowed by constant aches and pains. While caring for your baby is naturally a priority, it is equally important to look after your own body so you can stay active, comfortable, and present.

Osteopathy can be a great way to help reduce aches and pains, improve mobility, and address the muscular imbalances that can develop during the early stages of parenting. Through a combination of hands-on treatment and tailored exercises, osteopathy can support fathers in adapting to the physical demands of caring for their newborn.

Taking care of your body is not a luxury — it is part of being able to fully embrace the experience of fatherhood. So don’t wait any longer, we’re here to support you at Osteo Jura.
